Fse-visibility-in-smoke-v2.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

Smoke weakens the light from an exit sign and scatters light from the room lighting towards the observer, which lowers the contrast of the sign. Based on Jin (2002), pp. 2-42–2-43.

Original vector illustration for Visibility in smoke, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Jin (2002), pp. 2-42–2-43 (two reasons for reduced visibility); Mulholland (2002), p. 2-265 (contrast threshold); Van Rossum (2027), §6.5 (more light can reduce contrast)
  • Alt text: Side view of a smoky corridor: light from an exit sign weakens on its way to an eye, while ceiling light scattered by smoke also reaches the eye.
