Fse-oxygen-depletion-v3.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

In a closed room, burning about 1 kg of fuel lowers the oxygen to about 10 per cent and the fire dies down; with an open door, inflowing air sustains the fire. Based on Purser (2002), p. 2-155, and Van Rossum (2027), §4.8.

Original vector illustration for Oxygen depletion, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Purser (2002), p. 2-155 (about 1 kg of fuel lowers O2 to about 10 % in a closed domestic room); Van Rossum (2027), §4.8 and §4.11 (ventilation-controlled fire, external flames)
  • Alt text: Two room cross-sections: a closed room with a small dying fire and oxygen at 10 per cent; an open room with air flowing in low and smoke flowing out high.
