Summary

Energy balance for opposed-flow spread over a thin fuel: the gas flows towards the flame at speed Vg, and the flame heats the fuel over a length Δ from Ts to the ignition temperature Tig. Based on Quintiere (2002b), p. 2-248.

Original illustration for Opposed-flow flame spread, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Quintiere (2002b), p. 2-248, Figure 2-12.1 "Energy conservation analysis in opposed flow spread" (redraw, do not copy), Equations 3 to 5
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a thin fuel layer with a flame above its pyrolysis region and a dashed control volume ahead of the flame.
