Summary
Opposed-flow spread (left): the flame moves down against the rising air and heats only a strip of about 1 to 3 mm. Wind-aided spread (right): the flame moves up with the flow and heats the fuel over about its own length. Based on Quintiere (2002b), pp. 2-247 and 2-251.
Original illustration for Opposed-flow flame spread, level 4 Expert.
- Source basis: Quintiere (2002b), p. 2-247 (upwind = opposed flow, downwind = wind-aided; flow external or fire-induced), p. 2-250 (downward spread on a wall with buoyancy-induced flow of roughly 30 cm/s), p. 2-251 (heated length 1 to 3 mm in opposed flow, 0.1 to 10 m in wind-aided spread)
- Alt text: Two vertical walls: left, a flame spreading downward against rising air with a tiny heated zone; right, a flame spreading upward with a long heated zone.
