Summary

Heat release rate inside a room with one door (0.76 m by 2.05 m) against the heat release rate the burning fuel could produce; above about 3.3 MW the fire is ventilation-controlled. Based on Walton and Thomas (2002), p. 3-184, and Gottuk and Lattimer (2002), p. 2-80.

Original vector illustration for Ventilation-controlled fire, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Walton and Thomas (2002), p. 3-184 (Eq. 55); Gottuk and Lattimer (2002), p. 2-80 (Example 6); Australian Building Codes Board (2020a), Data Sheet B1, p. 14 (heat generated outside when pyrolysis exceeds air supply).
  • Alt text: Line chart: heat release inside the room rises with the fuel's potential heat release up to 3.3 MW and then stays flat; the excess is shaded as burning outside.
