Summary

Emissivity of a uniform smoke layer against its thickness, ε = 1 − exp(−κS), for the soot absorption coefficients of Plexiglas, wood and polystyrene flames. Based on Tien et al. (2002), pp. 1-78 and 1-82, and National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 2.4-10.

Original vector illustration for Emissivity, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Tien et al. (2002), p. 1-78 (Eq. 20), p. 1-82 (Table 1-4.3), p. 1-85 (0.33 for 0.5 m wood smoke); National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 2.4-10 (κ = 0.8 m⁻¹ for solid wood fuels)
  • Alt text: Three rising curves of smoke layer emissivity against layer thickness from 0 to 6 m, all approaching 1; the wood curve gives 0.33 at 0.5 m.
