Summary

Bomb calorimeter (left) and the difference between gross and net heat of combustion (right): the net value excludes the latent heat of the water formed (2.26 kJ per gram of water). Based on Drysdale (2002), pp. 1-92 to 1-93.

Original vector illustration for Heat of combustion, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Drysdale (2002), p. 1-92 (bomb calorimetry in pure oxygen, temperature rise, minimal heat losses) and p. 1-93 (gross and net values, 2.26 kJ/g, net value used in fire calculations)
  • Alt text: Steel bomb with a fuel sample in oxygen inside a water bath; beside it a bar splitting gross heat into net heat and latent heat of water.
