Summary

Two thermal balances can exist under subcritical surrounding conditions in the simple model. Based on Gray (2002), chapter 2-10, pp. 2-213–2-214.

Original illustration for Self-heating, level 3 Advanced.

  • Source basis: Gray (2002), chapter 2-10, pp. 2-213–2-214, Figure 2-10.1; redraw, do not copy.
  • Alt text: Heat-generation and heat-loss curves intersect at a stable lower temperature and an unstable higher temperature.
  • Accuracy notes: Do not call the balance thermodynamic equilibrium. No universal temperatures or rates are represented.
