Short title	Unsealed tray carrying flame and sealed penetration blocking it, with backing and contact shown.
Image title	Section through a fire separation with two cable-tray penetrations and a fire on the left. In the upper, unsealed penetration, flame and smoke pass through the gap around the tray. In the lower penetration, backing material and a firestop seal fill the gap in contact with the tray and the wall, flame is stopped and only reduced heat reaches the other side. A note says the seal must be a rated system, not a generic filler.
