The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and understanding of fire protection systems and concepts. The certification is based on an examination that covers a variety of topics in the fire protection industry, including codes, standards, design methodology, engineering calculations, installation techniques, and maintenance procedures. This certification demonstrates a level of expertise in all areas of fire protection and can be seen as an assurance to the public that a specialist has achieved the highest standard for his or her profession.

The CFPS program requires that applicants meet certain eligibility requirements before they can take the exam. These include having at least five years experience in either the field of fire protection or related areas such as engineering or architecture; completion of at least 16 hours of NFPA approved training; and achieving 80% or better on both the written and practical exams. Additionally, participants must pass additional tests such as case studies, problem-solving exercises, and facility inspections. Upon successful completion of all requirements, individuals are awarded the CFPS designation.

The CFPS exam is divided into two sections: one focusing on safety principles and one focusing on code enforcement practices. The safety principles section covers topics such as building codes; fire resistance ratings; types of extinguishing agents; sprinkler applications; detection systems; ventilation systems; evacuation plans; emergency response plans; smoke control systems; electrical system safety requirements; hazardous materials storage requirements; fire alarm systems installations treatments for combustible materials and other related topics. The code enforcement practices section focuses on government regulations and inspection procedures related to building code enforcement as well as NFPA standards development process. Both sections require an extensive understanding of fire safety principles as well as specific knowledge about codes and standards compliance requirements.

In addition to understanding all aspects of fire protection systems design and operation, certified professionals must also demonstrate proper system installation techniques using up-to-date methods while adhering to applicable laws and regulations governing life safety measures prescribed by local jurisdictions or organizations such as NFPA 101 Life Safety Code®. Certification holders must maintain their proficiency by participating in continuing education courses provided through organizations like NFPA’s Institute for Fire Protection Professionals (IFPP).
